Three categories of member.

Class A surveyors
They have three years of experience, at least one of them working independently as a marine or inland-waterway surveyor, command the full range of skills required, and have worked in at least three fields of expertise: casualties and damage, commercial vessels, compliance, pleasure craft, new build and refit supervision, arbitration and conciliation.

Class B surveyors
They have at least ten years of experience in their speciality and have already been consulted as an assisting expert by other surveyors, by insurers or in the course of legal proceedings.

Partners
They have ten years of experience in yachting, shipping or inland waterways and wish to build close working relations with the other FIEM members.

Prerequisites
Whatever your speciality, you have worked at least ten years in that field and have been engaged as a consultant, project owner, manager or in any other capacity carrying personal liability.

Submitting an application
Sponsorship makes joining easier but is not a requirement: you may apply directly. You compile and submit your application, together with the supporting documents requested.

Review by the Board
Your application is reviewed within fifteen working days of receipt of a complete application. Any refusal is reasoned and set out in writing. An application may be resubmitted in a different form at no extra cost.
Submit your application.
The pack contains the application form and the certificate of physical fitness, to be completed and returned to the secretariat. Surveyor and partner applications use the same document, which covers the information needed for both profiles. These documents are currently available in French only.

Admission and subscription.
Applications for membership are examined by the FIEM Supervisory Committee, which accepts or refuses them.
An application must be accompanied by a cheque for €100.00 (one hundred euros) payable to the FIEM, which entitles you to attend the “CFEMF Wednesdays” training sessions free of charge for one accounting year, even if your application is refused.
This sum is not deductible from the annual subscription and is not refunded in the event of refusal.
The annual subscription, payable only once membership is definitively granted, includes your membership of FEMAS, of which all European nationals who join the FIEM automatically become members.
The FIEM also passes part of your subscription on to the CFEMF.
