The Federation
A professional association founded in 1983.
49 independent surveyors, covering every branch of shipping and yachting, work together within the FIEM as a French non-profit association (articles of association).
From 1999 onwards, at the request of the French Minister of Transport and of the European Commission, the F.I.E.M. took part — alongside the F.I.N. (French Marine Industries Federation) and the Conseil Supérieur de la Navigation de Plaisance et des Sports Nautiques, under the auspices of AFNOR (the French standards body) — in drawing up the AFNOR ACX 50-827 standard, adopted in 2005 and still in force.
That standard contributes to defining the professional ethics of the marine surveyor's trade: professionalism, experience, competence, diligence, intellectual honesty and complete independence of judgement, free from any economic pressure.
Only surveyors who have been in practice for more than three years may apply for FIEM approval, and then only after a detailed review of their technical and legal record and of their command of survey work.
The FIEM also passes on the profession's know-how: it is a co-founder of the CFEMF (Marine and Inland-Waterway Surveyors Training Centre), a Qualiopi-accredited training body.
