After an incident at sea, the surveyor establishes the causes, extent and origin of the damage — damage, ingress of water, fire, grounding or sinking. Where two parties are involved, the survey is carried out jointly and serves as the basis both for calculating compensation and for any subsequent legal proceedings.

Verification of a vessel's compliance and its administrative regularisation, with regard to CE or other applicable standards. Importation formalities, registration and change of flag. The surveyor protects the client by checking that the vessel examined is compliant.

Before buying, selling or insuring a pleasure craft, the surveyor draws up an objective picture for the client and establishes a value agreed by insurers. Hull, engine, rigging, installations: the examination reveals what can escape even an enthusiast's eye, and sometimes provides leverage in negotiation.

During a new build or a refit, the surveyor monitors progress, quality of workmanship and compliance with good practice. They attend at the key stages of the works, report defects, and validate technical choices against the client's expectations.

Before legal proceedings are started, the amicable surveyor helps you reach a settlement in the event of a dispute. Instructed directly by the claimant or by the party complained of, their work may be partly covered by your legal expenses insurance. Where mediation proves impossible, the court appoints a court-approved surveyor.
